Prom, homecoming and graduation are all great excuses to dust off the heels and put on a stunning outfit. They give you something to look forward to after all the studying and exams. We’ve lost count of the number of times prom has featured in romantic movies, although sometimes it’s Halloween, Valentine’s Day or school dances. Here are the 25 best prom dresses from romance movies.
1. 10 Things I Hate About You
It’s a great moment when Kat (Julia Stiles) decides to go to prom with Patrick, allowing Bianca (Larisa Oleynik) to also go with Cameron. Bianca wore a pretty pink number with a cute pink tutu. In contrast, Kat surprised us with an elegant blue dress paired with a matching shawl. A pearl necklace rested on her neck, and her hair was accessorised with a red rose. The two sisters delivered two different looks, but both were lovely.
2. A Cinderella Story
In this Cinderella story, the royal ball is a Halloween school dance. Sam (Hilary Duff) wears a white ballgown wedding dress with a lace sweetheart neckline and sequin bodice. The look is finished off with a lace masquerade mask to match. A fitting look for Cinderella going to meet her prince.
3. Another Cinderlla Story
Third on this list is a musical Cinderella film. The royal ball in this version is a black and white Valentine’s Day school dance. Of course, Mary (Selena Gomez) had to go against the rules and wear a red dress. The dress was paired with red shoes, red lipstick and a gold masquerade mask. The knee-length ruffled skirt makes it one to remember, coupled with the firey tango she performed in the dress that is equally as fierce.
4. Date With Love
In this Hallmark movie, Heidi (Bailee Madison) attends prom in a rose gold dress after trying a few different prom dresses. The top half of the dress is covered with embellishment, making this the perfect choice for a special occasion.
5. Drive Me Crazy
The back of Nicole’s (Melissa Joan Hart) dress, or more accurately the lack of back, makes this dress one of the more memorable ones. It’s a bold choice for a school dance, but the simplicity of the dress design and the beauty of the colour keeps it classy.
6. Endless Love
Jade (Gabriella Wilde) hosts a graduation party to celebrate the end of high school. As the party’s host, it’s only right she came dressed to impress. Her little red number did the trick.
7. Footloose (1984)
This classic movie always gets your head bobbing and body swaying. When it gets to the prom night, Ariel’s (Lori Singer) fun blush pink dress suits the energetic, musical number to Wham’s Footloose.
8. Footloose (2011)
Honouring the original Footloose, Julianne Hough’s Ariel wears a similar blush pink dress. The off the shoulder sleeves and flowy hem make her spins all the more eye-catching.
9. Grease
Sandy’s (Olivia Newton-John) pale yellow prom dress suits not only her character’s innocence but also the upbeat hand jive she performed in it.
10. He’s All That
At number 10 we have another red dress to add to the list. Red is a striking sexy colour that makes a statement, so it’s a bold option for prom dresses. Padgett (Addison Rae) wears a low cut, spaghetti-strapped red dress with a thigh split that screams confidence. It’s reminiscent of the red dress in She’s All That.
11. High School Musical 3: Senior Year
In the third and final film of this wildly popular trilogy, the cast performs in a school musical. In the musical, they sing A Night To Remember, a song about going to prom and Gabriella (Vanessa Hudgens) wears a fun cream and gold dress.
12. It’s A Boy Girl Thing
Nell (Samaire Armstrong) makes a grand entrance to her school prom wearing a lovely green dress with vertical gold tassel stripes. It’s no wonder the prom king ditches the prom queen for her.
13. Mean Girls
You don’t need to wear a dress to prom to look good. Janis (Lizzy Caplan) wore an oversized purple suit with a bow tie, and she looked great. Pantsuits and jumpsuits do the trick just fine.
14. My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2
If a dress looks like a wedding dress, then it’s definitely good enough for the prom. Paris (Elena Kampouris) wore a white, floor-length dress with a sweetheart neckline. Simple and classy.
15. Never Been Kissed
Undercover report Josie (Drew Barrymore) attends prom as Rosalind from Shakespeare’s As You Like It. She dazzles in her pink and gold costume, every bit worthy of the prom queen title.
16. Perfect Date
It’s not hard to understand why rich girl Shelby (Camila Mendes) is popular. The mustard yellow v-neck dress she wears to the school dance is effortlessly pretty.
17. Pretty In Pink
Andie (Molly Ringwald) wears one of the more original dresses on the list, probably because it’s two dresses combined. Her polka dot cold shoulder dress definitely does make her look pretty in pink.
18. Prom
This Disney movie is all about the prom, hence the name. There are so many prom dresses to choose from, but Nova’s (Aimee Teegarden) gold dress is pretty cute.
19. She’s All That
Let’s be honest, Laney (Rachael Leigh Cook) was pretty before the make-over, but her dress sense did improve after. The red dress was the first time we saw her all glammed up; she could barely walk in her heels and felt exposed in the dress. By the time prom comes around, she confidently sparkles in her black spaghetti strap dress.
20. She’s The Man
Arriving in typical late fashion, Viola (Amanda Bynes) appears on stage for her debutante ball in a satin green fishtail dress that hugs her curves. Light green isn’t the easiest colour to pull off, but she does it well.
21. The DUFF
Finally embracing who she is, Bianca (Mae Whitman), with the help of her friends, transforms her everyday clothes into a tailor-made prom dress that encapsulates her personality.
22. The Kissing Booth
Orange is another colour you don’t see many people wear to prom, but Elle (Joey King), makes us question why. She rocks a cute peach-orange satin dress.
23. The Spectacular Now
Aimee (Shailene Woodley) often wears yellow. But not a bright yellow, a light pale yellow, subtle but warm. So it’s no surprise that the prom dress turns out to be yellow too and adorable like her personality.
24. To All the Boys: Always and Forever
Lara Jean (Lana Condor) may be the main character, but her best friend Christine (Madeleine Arthur) has the better prom dress. Her emerald green dress paired with long gloves is an elegant combination. Lara Jean’s dress for the retirees’ ball in the second movie is also worth mentioning. The teal dress is a show stopper.
25. Twilight
Despite not wanting to attend prom, Bella (Kristen Stewart) goes wearing a royal blue ruffle layered dress. She puts on a white cardigan because it’s cold, but she looks much better without it. The look is completed with a converse trainer and a cast for her broken leg.
