Ranking The Best Nicholas Sparks Adaptations

Ranking The Best Nicholas Sparks Adaptations

Nicholas Sparks is an author famous for his romantic novels that are not conventual and tend to take a sad turn. Whether it’s the leading couple not ending up together or a sudden death. Sparks knows how to pull on the heartstrings of his audience. Let’s count down his top adaptations and heads up spoiler to come!

11. The Choice (2016)

The Choice

This movie is the latest Nicholas Sparks adaptations. It may be questionable against your morals as the leading character embarks on an affair. A lot happens throughout the film, from the pair disliking each other to getting together, puppies being born and a coma. The storyline does not lack drama.

10. The Best of Me (2014)

The Best of Me Nicholas Sparks

Many people have questioned why James Marsden didn’t play the leading man in many movies and in this movie, he gets a chance to shine, well kinda.  The film revolves around Marsden’s character Dawson, but we alternate between scenes of Dawson as a teenager and in the present. Dawson had a troubled upbringing and ended up pushing his co-star’s character Amanda away. With a sad and sentimental ending this makes for a good watch.

9. The Last Song (2010)

The Last Song

Starring Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth, no one would have predicted what would follow for them. A story about a brother and sister spending time with their estranged father. During their time Cyrus’s character starts a romance with Hemsworth whilst Cyrus and her brother find out their father is sick. This movie keeps you engaged and with a song like ‘When I Look at You’ what more can we want. When the movie results in the main two characters dating, you know the chemistry is good.

8. The Lucky One (2012)

The lucky One

Soldier Zac Efron’s life is saved as he is distracted picking up the photo of a woman. He becomes intent on finding the woman in the photo and once he is successful develops a relationship with her and her son. Their relationship is plagued with obstacles including an over-zealous ex and deceit. This is one of my personal favourites. There is a quiet tone throughout the movie and the viewer is intrigued with how things are going to turn out. An entertaining watch for sure.

7. Nights in Rodanthe (2008)

Nights In Rodanthe

Starring Diane Lane and Richard Gere in their third movie together, the pair meet in a chance encounter that leads to more. Gere’s character is a troubled doctor being sued and Lane’s character is in the process of getting divorced. While the performances of Gere and Lane offer moments of genuine emotion and depth the film is slightly melodramatic. Nevertheless, it is a Spark adaptation, and it fulfils the criteria. This movie will have you in your feelings by the end. Also, we were introduced to Mae Whitman (The Duff).

6. Safe Haven (2013)

Safe Haven

Seemingly, a theme that Sparks likes to incorporate is the ex that poses difficulty for the new budding relationship. In this adaptation, the leading actress is ‘Dancing With the Stars’ Julianne Hough, who plays Katie a woman trying to escape her past and outrun her husband but is drawn in by a local widower played by Josh Duhamel and his kids. There are several layers to this movie as we unlock Katie’s past which keeps you engaged.

5. Dear John (2010)

Dear John

One of the more annoying movies on the list. Without a doubt, the popularity of this movie is due to the leading actors Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried. The movie revolves around a couple who meet but Tatum’s character is in the army and away from Seyfried. During his time away, they write letters to each other hence Dear John. Despite some disappointment, it is still a nice watch.

4. The Longest Ride (2015)

The Longest Ride- Nicholas Sparks

This movie entangles two love stories from different generations. Luke a daring bull rider and Sophia a student with a future art career, find themselves captivated by the love story of Ira and Ruth. The two have very different interests and are unsure if it will work. The story of Ira and Ruth is set in 1940 in which they fell in love and had their struggles. Luke and Sophia played by Scott Eastwood and Britt Robertson draw inspiration from Ira and Ruth’s story as they navigate their relationship.

3. Message in a Bottle (1999)

Message in a Bottle

One of the older Sparks movies that may get forgotten amid the younger romances. But let us not forget that this movie is the first Nicholas Sparks adaptation and paved the way for the rest. As the title suggests the movie revolves around a journalist named Theresa who finds a message written in a glass bottle and investigates who the author is.

2. The Notebook (2004)

The Notebook- Nicholas Sparks

This may come as a surprise to some that this is not in the number one spot as it is a popular option. The Notebook is a movie that takes the viewer on a journey. The barriers of class, unapproving parents and time not being able to keep the love birds apart forever. Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams have incredible chemistry which oozes when they are on screen. And that kiss! You know what I’m talking about. A must-watch and one to recommend to others.

1. A Walk to Remember (2002)

A walk to remember - Nicholas Sparks

This cinematic masterpiece incorporates love, redemption and loss. The film takes the viewer on an emotional roller-coaster. The common trope of good girl/bad boy but with a bitter ending. Mandy Moore’s character warns Shane West’s character not to fall in love with her and the surprising reasoning unfolds. Mandy Moore and Shane West’s chemistry grips the audience and makes them feel the pain even more.
