Having a successful acting career is challenging even for adult actors, so it’s all the more impressive with young ones. Hollywood continues to showcase the talent of many child actresses whose skills and talent are a treat to enjoy. Let’s explore some of the best young talents whose movie careers began before 10.
7. Quvenzhané Wallis
Kicking off this list is the young talented actress Quvenzhané Wallis. She starred in Beasts of the Southern Wild at 9 years old and was nominated for many awards, including an Academy Award (Oscars).
Following this, she went on to play Annie in the 2014 adaptation alongside renowned actors Jamiel Foxx and Cameron Diaz. She has a leading role in the sports drama TV show Swagger. She is set to star in an upcoming science adventure series Karma and the Galactic Descendants, so we’ll definitely see more of her.
6. Chloe Grace Mortez
In 6th place, we have a well-known actress featured in many blockbuster movies, Chloë Grace Moretz. Moretz’s first film that received recognition was Heart of the Beholder when she was 8 years old. One of her more notable performances while under the age of 10 was Big Mommas House 2, released in 2006. For her work in this film, she was nominated for a Young Artist Award for best performance in a feature film-young actress aged ten or younger.
Moretz has continued acting, adding voiceover work to her impressive resume playing Wednesday in The Addams Family movies. She’s gone on to star in many movies working alongside Hollywood greats like Denzel Washington in Equalizer and Nicholas cage in Kick-Ass.
5. Bailee Madison
Madison’s career started at a mere 2 weeks old when she appeared in commercials. Her breakthrough role was in Bridge to Terabithia (2007), which she started filming at 7 years old. She has been nominated for several awards, including the Saturn Award for her role in Brothers (10 years old). Her career skyrocketed in her teenage years, appearing in several successful films and TV shows, including Just Go With It with Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston and Good Witch.
Although some of her roles are small, Madison can always leave a lasting impression. In more recent times, she has been working on both her music and acting career and has been cast in the latest series in the Pretty Little Liars franchise.
4. Drew Barrymore
Coming from a dynasty of actors and actresses, we can safely say that the gene did not escape Drew Barrymore. Her career started like others on this list, with her appearing in commercials. Her first major role was in Steven Spielberg’s E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial at 6 years old. The film was a massive hit at the box office.
Barrymore has continued to land leading roles in movies such as Never Been Kissed and 50 First Dates. In 2020 she started a talk show called The Drew Barrymore Show. She hosts special guests, including former co-stars, and features human-interest stories.
3. Mara Wilson
Mara Wilson was an exemplary child actress with talent equal to her adult co-stars. She displayed a range of emotions and captivated her audiences; being adorable was a bonus. Most of her successful movies were filmed before she reached 10. These include Matilda, Miracle on 34th Street and Mrs Doubtfire, in which she worked alongside the late Robin Williams. Matilda is arguably her best work, and her portrayal won her a Young Star Award.
As an adult, Wilson stepped away from acting on screen and instead has gone into voice acting with credits in BoJack Horseman and Big Hero 6: The Series. She also wrote an autographical book, Where Am I Now? True Stories of Girlhood and Accidental Fame about her experiences growing up as a young actress.
2. Abigail Breslin
Breslin is another popular name that appears on this list. Her first acting role was in the box office hit Signs (2002) at the age of 6. She starred in Raising Helen alongside Kate Hudson in 2004, but her breakout role came at age 10, playing Olive Hoover in Little Miss Sunshine. Her performance got her nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
She went on to work with big names like Ryan Reynold in Definitely, Maybe and Cameron Diaz in My Sister’s Keeper. More recently, she has been focusing on music, releasing an EP in February 2022 called Witchcraft.
1. Dakota Fanning
One of Hollywood’s go-to child actresses, Dakota Fanning, has a long line of credits to her name. Her first significant role was in I am Sam in which she starred alongside Michelle Pfeiffer and Sean Penn. For her performance, she became the youngest actress to win an award for the Screen Actors Guild at 7 years old.
Fanning then went on to play roles in Uptown Girls with the late Brittany Murphy, and book-to-movie adaptations The Cat in The Hat and Charlotte’s Web. To this day, Fanning continues to grace our screens in both movies and television shows, with a recent appearance on The First Lady television series.
