We’ve all been there. We see a new TV show trailer that intrigues us, so we start watching it. Week by week, a new episode is released, and we become increasingly hooked. The season ends on a cliffhanger that has us questioning how we’ll survive until the next season airs, only to discover that the show has been cancelled and there won’t be another season. Nightmare!
This isn’t something that only happens occasionally; it’s a regular occurrence. There is always the risk that a TV series won’t make it to the next season, and I, unfortunately, have started several TV shows that were later cancelled. Most of the time, it’s after season 1, but sometimes it gets a few seasons in before it’s cancelled due to declining viewership.
The worse thing about a show being cancelled is the lack of closure. Most of the time, a season ends on a cliffhanger, so we’re left wondering what would have happened in the next season and how the characters would have handled it. If we’re lucky, the writers reveal what they planned in an interview which was the case for Kyle Xy.
However, this doesn’t really happen, especially if the show has only had one season, so most of the time, we’re forced to imagine how things would have unfolded. It doesn’t change the fact that you don’t get to see the story unfold on screen, but it does soften the disappointment. Cue the fanfiction.
As romance lovers, the lack of closure regarding the romantic relationships on the show is the real pain, particularly when it comes to love triangles:
- a) The Tomorrow People: Would John stay with Astrid or get back with Cara?
- b) Still Star-Crossed: Is Rosaline destined to be with Prince Escalus or Benvolio?
- c) Scorpion: Is Walter in a relationship with Florence, or does he work it out with Paige?
Not seeing the characters develop and their love stories unfolding is frustrating to accept.
It’s also sad for the cast and crew who put so much energy and effort into the show, only to have it end before its time. When you’re following an actor’s career, and they finally land a leading role in a TV show, you share their disappointment when it doesn’t work out.
But let’s be honest, sometimes a show deserves to be cancelled. Some shows can be quite repetitive and drag on, hence the reduction in viewers. It makes you appreciate shows with a planned end; This Is Us is a prime example. They always knew they would do six seasons, which helped them plan and write so creatively and strategically that they produced tear-jerking, award-winning content. Appreciate this can’t be the case for all shows, but for shows whose episodes follow the same pattern, they need to work harder on their overarching storylines to keep the show viewers engaged. An increasingly difficult task with the amount of content available for consumption.
To end this little rant, here’s a list of TV shows I’ve watched that have been cancelled:
Freaks and Geeks
Camelot
Designated Survivor
Girlfriends
God Friended Me
Kyle XY
Living Single
Raising Dion
Scorpion
Star
Star-Crossed
The Catch
The Event
The Tomorrow People
