Matthew McConaughey, aka Mr Alright Alright Alright, has an endearing personality that captures us all. He has acted in a diverse range of movies from sci-fi (Interstellar) to thriller (Serenity). But we all know on this blog we love to focus on romance. McConaughey has proven himself to be quite the captivating leading man in rom coms with a dashing smile that can have us blushing at the screens.
5. Ghosts of Girlfriends Past (2009)
First up on this list is Ghost of Girlfriends Past. McConaughey does what he does best as he portrays a womaniser called Connor. Starring alongside him is Jennifer Garner who plays the one that got away. McConaughey’s character is met by different people in his life, from ex-girlfriends to assistants who appear to him as ghosts. Ghost of Girlfriends past, present and future. Upon reflection, he is able to see the error of his ways in his treatment of Garner. But is he too late?
The concept of the film is strange but weirdly captivating. With several appearances including Emma Stone and Michael Douglas. A decent watch but not one of McConaughey’s best works.
4. Fool’s Gold (2008)
A romantic action movie starring both Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey. The plot centres around Finn who is a treasure hunter. In his quest to find treasure he finds himself on a Yacht with his ex-wife Hudson’s character. Kidnapping and backstabbing, will the pair reunite?
Not the greatest movie known to man however, the chemistry between Hudson and McConaughey is enough to keep you entertained. Their characters may annoy each other tremendously, but the love is clearly there.
3. Failure to Launch (2006)
Failure to Launch has a plot that is indicative of the rom-coms created in the 2000s. In this film McConaughey portrays a 35-year-old man named Tripp who is so accustomed to the life he has living at home that he shows no plan of moving out. In a desperate plea, his parents hire an expert Paula played by Sarah Jessica Parker to encourage him to make the move.
A questionable plot as we hope no parents would go to such lengths to get their child to move out. Despite that, when declarations are made with McConaughey’s character restrained and tied to a chair you can’t help but watch and enjoy.
2. The Wedding Planner (2001)
Starring alongside our leading man is Jennifer Lopez in this 2001 romantic comedy. In this movie, McConaughey’s character is engaged to another woman but has a memorable encounter with Miss Lopez’s character Mary. Unbeknownst to them both, Mary is the wedding planner. There is clearly chemistry and an attraction between the pair, but will they let something as simple as an upcoming wedding get in the way of that?
A meet-cute what more can we ask for! The movie is enticing with several cute scenes between the leading pair. A watch that will have you go through a rollercoaster of emotions.
1. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003)
And at number one the Hudson/McConaughey pairing strikes again! In this film, the charming Ben bets his co-workers he can make any girl fall in love with him. The only issue is he has chosen a formidable opponent in Andie, whose own agenda is to ensure she gets dumped by a man for her article ‘How to lose a guy in 10 days’.
The premise of the movie is unique, and the dynamics make for an interesting watch. Embarrassing scenes with Hudson’s character purposefully acting annoying coupled with undeniable chemistry make this an easy enjoyable watch. From the very first exchange between the leading characters the audience knows they are in for a delight.
