Mr Malcolm’s List Is The Next Best Regency Movie

The Regency romance comedy Mr Malcolm’s List is almost here!

Written by Suzanne Allain based on her novel, Mr Malcolm’s List was released as a short film directed by Emma Holly Jones back in February 2019. After getting over a million views (currently two million), it received the support to be turned into a feature-length film.

Set in 19th century England, Mr Malcolm’s List tells the story of a young woman who enlists her friend to get revenge on London’s most eligible bachelor after failing to meet his requirements for a wife.

Like many people, I have been eagerly awaiting the film’s release since stumbling across the short film in 2019. This was before Bridgerton season 1 was announced, so the need for onscreen adaptions of Regency romances was even greater.

Finally, the release date has been confirmed for July 2022, just a few months away. I can hardly wait!

Why You Will Love This Movie

There are so many things about this movie to be excited about; let’s start with the cast.

Excellent Casting

The diversity of the cast is outstanding. In the movie, black British actor Sope Dirisu and Indian actress Freida Selena play the romantic leads, Mr Malcolm and Selina. Sam Heughan and Theo James are just a few other actors gracing the screen, so expectations are high that this movie will deliver great performances.

It’s not often that colour-conscious casting is used, especially for period dramas, where diversity is considered historically inaccurate. This is not the case for Mr Malcolm’s List, and we’re beginning to see more of this in entertainment generally. Hopefully, they’ll be a move towards more colour-blind casting where race is not even a factor, like in Shondaland’s Still Star-Crossed.

It also seems like the servants will be characters too. They may not have had the most glamorous jobs, but they had their own lives and were essential for running the household. It’s great when shows like Downton Abbey give them a spotlight, and it seems Mr Malcolm’s List will do the same.

Worldbuilding

Even without Netflix’s Bridgerton’s budget, the short film still managed to transport us to the past. They took advantage of the historic buildings and picturesque landscapes England has to offer. Coupled with the set and costume design, they created a world that’s elegant and captivating, simple yet larger than life.

The List

If the parallels weren’t enough, Mr Malcolm’s List also features a list of requirements in a bride that mirrors Anthony’s list in Bridgerton season 2. If you haven’t read the book, it will be intriguing to discover how this works out for Mr Malcolm. Does he find a wife that ticks all his boxes?

Bridgerton’s success has proven how popular Regency romances can be with audiences. Fingers-crossed, Mr Malcolm’s List receives a similar reception and lives up to the high expectations we have for the film. One thing I know for sure is that I will be buying my ticket to watch this movie in theatres. Will you? Comment below and if you liked this article, please follow the Facebook and Pinterest page.
